After losing his wife, Ellen, to a rare liver disease when she was only 34, Allen Klein discovered that humor had been one of their most powerful tools for coping with illness, uncertainty, and grief. That realization changed the course of his life and inspired a mission that would continue for more than four decades.

Born and raised in the Bronx, Allen began his career as a scenic designer for CBS television, where his work included the beloved children’s program Captain Kangaroo. He later earned a master’s degree in human development with a focus on therapeutic humor and became the world’s first Jollytologist®.

Through his books, lectures, and workshops, Allen has helped people around the world find moments of light during some of life’s darkest experiences. His work explores not only the healing possibilities of humor, but also the importance of awe, perspective, gratitude, and the small, unexpected experiences he calls “mini-miracles.”

The Jollytologist® is an intimate and uplifting portrait of a man whose life demonstrates that laughter does not diminish pain or hardship. After losing his wife, Ellen, to a rare liver disease when she was 34, Allen recognized that humor had been one of their most meaningful coping tools. That experience inspired him to devote his life to helping others discover moments of light in difficult times.

Before becoming the Jollytologist®, Allen worked as a scenic designer for CBS television in New York, including on the beloved children’s program Captain Kangaroo. He later earned a master’s degree in human development with a focus on therapeutic humor.

Allen has written more than 30 books, including The Healing Power of Humor, The Courage to Laugh, Embracing Life After Loss, and The AWE Factor. Sky Bergman is an award-winning filmmaker, photographer, author, and Professor Emeritus of Photography and Video at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

Her nationally broadcast PBS documentary Lives Well Lived celebrates the wit, wisdom, and experiences of adults ages 75 to 100. The film has screened in hundreds of communities and inspired intergenerational programs that bring younger and older people together through storytelling and shared experiences.

Her documentary The Mochi Movie, featuring actor and activist George Takei, explores the Japanese American tradition of making mochi as a lens into resilience, identity, history, and intergenerational connection.

Sky creates films and projects that celebrate the richness of the human experience and demonstrate the power of shared stories to foster empathy, understanding, and connection.
